Virginia Tech has installed electronic message boards in 165 classrooms to inform students and personnel of any emergencies at the school. A committee the university formed to review security after last year's shootings suggested the devices. While the university previously set up an alert system that enables subscribers to be told about emergencies through text messages, e-mail, phone, and Instant Messenger, poor cellphone reception in various campus buildings and a "no-cellphone" rule that some professors enforce prompted school officials to equip the classrooms with the message boards.
