A broad network of signs and historical plaques will be erected in Ferndale, Mich., over the next two years to promote cultural tourism and to establish a visual identity for the downtown area and four nearby communities. "Visually, it might help to better guide and identify what are the assets and how to get there," says Cristina Sheppard-Decius, executive director of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority. "The more that we educate not only our residents, but our visitors, the more they will value our community." Sheppard-Decius also hopes to set up a committee to pinpoint Ferndale's "hidden gems" and make them stand out to residents and tourists through signage and interactive resources. "With wayfinding, you're developing an identity," she says. "We'll look at the entire city for a consistent brand or look with the signage." (Web Link)
